  1. Aww I only skimmed thru this, but what a snapshot! The reason for skimming being that I have no blasted sound on my laptop at the moment?!?! But love seeing a snapshot of the girl behind the words. Gosh, that sounds massively stalkery doesn't it... sorry, I don't know how other to put it>!

  11. Thank you! :)) We really were super excited to be there.

Yes, we rented.. we only found out a day before that pretty much all AirBnB's in NYC are illegal (!!!) but it was too late to change our accommodation at such short notice so we just had to risk it. In the end it was all OK but the guy renting to the place to us totally didn't live there, if you know what I mean. I think next time I would prefer to pay the extra cost and rent a hotel!

  13. I had no idea! I wonder why they're illegal? I mean, if you own the place why would it be illegal to rent it out? That doesn't seem fair. The reason I asked before is because I'm going to be in London for three weeks next May and I'm seriously considering renting a flat through Airbnb. I usually just stay in a hotel when I visit the UK, but I can't afford that if I'm going to be there for so long. I wanted to know if the whole renting process was trustworthy, you know?

  14. From what I gathered, it's to do with pushing apartment and hotel prices up? I think. I might have got that wrong or over simplified it but I think if AirBnB was allowed, a lot more people wouldn't be able to afford housing in NYC? It makes sense and if I'd known, I would have booked a hotel instead.

Anyway, regardless of those issues I would 100% recommend AirBnB. We always rent apartments when we go away on holiday and haven't had any issues. We always rent the apartment while the host is away but you can rent and share the house/flat with the owner, which makes it even cheaper I believe. I think this is really good for when you are visiting a country you're completely unfamiliar with and/or don't speak the language. We might consider this if we ever go to Japan or Hong Kong.

Also: if you're worried about getting to your location and not having anywhere to stay (this is SUPER SUPER rare) AirBnB will find somewhere else for you to stay immediately. They either refund you the money so you can find a hotel OR they will do all the work for you and find another AirBnB host for you to stay with. But this is literally so rare it's hard to find examples online of it happening. So don't worry about being stranded, there are precautions in place to prevent this ever happening.

  15. Ahhh that makes sense now (about the NYC apartments).

All of the info you gave me is really helpful, thank you! This will be my very first time using Airbnb to book my accommodations so that's why I'm a little leery and skeptical. Well, not 'skeptical,' I just want to make sure everything is legit before I fork over thousands of dollars for a three-week stay HAHA!

I'm looking to rent a private flat that I can have all to myself. If I was staying in a country that I didn't speak the language, then I'd definitely consider renting with the owner (such a good idea!). So far, I've found a couple of really decent-looking ones in and around the Canary Wharf area of London.
