BIRMINGHAM

I moved from Kent to Birmingham in March but definitely haven't explored as much as I should have by now. These pictures are from an architectural walk that took us on a 1.5 mile tour and finished in this (partially) derelict building and it was an amazing experience. I need to make more of an effort to explore Birmingham, there's so much going on in the city that I'd be a fool to miss out.

SCOTLAND

Virgin Trains kindly compensated us (due to a booking mix up) with two first class tickets to anywhere in the UK, so we made the most it by travelling to both Edinburgh and Glasgow. It was our first time visiting Scotland and we found it utterly beautiful. Our AirBnB apartment was inspiring and the owner a delight; I'd love to revisit again in the future and spend a bit more time in both cities.

NEW YORK

This was one of those "dream holidays" you've wanted to go on for a long, long time and we finally did it! We visited New York for Halloween and it was every bit as magical as I imagined it would be. There is still so much left to explore in New York and while we want to revisit the US, I think our next visit will be paid to either New Orleans, Detroit, or Philadelphia.

BELFAST

Our rather unexpected and final mini-break of 2014 was to Belfast. We explored this friendly city over three days, visiting the Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, and Titanic exhibition. The walk up to Belfast Castle provided an amazing view of the city and charming cat garden. It would be nice to return to Northern Ireland to see the countryside in summer.

  1. Hi Sophie! Where are you from in Kent? I grew up in Thanet and now I've moved to the midlands much like yourself (I'm in Peterborough). I miss the sea! I saw you've done a post about Quex Park, that place is crazy! They have a gorgeous cafe/farm shop there now :-) Anyway, wishing you more happy adventures for 2015 x

  5. I loved this! Such beautiful photographs! I'll be visiting Glasgow for the time this May and I'm super excited about going! My BFF recently moved back there to be with her family last year and I'll be staying with her and her husband for a week :) I always love going to new places because it gives me a chance to explore and wander around with "new eyes."

  6. Really lovely roundup of travels. Will take a look at all the individual posts as well. It looks like you were able to travel to some really lovely places. Scotland has also been on our (my boyfriend and I) list of places to visit and from the photos, Belfast also looks amazing!

  7. I'm so glad you enjoyed Belfast, it's my home city and I love hearing when people like it! I actually went to the school opposite Botanic Gardens. On your next visit make sure you visit Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park (and the Lagan Towpath). The Mourne Coastal Route and Tollymore Forest Park are also beautiful xx

Just a tip: I would make New Orleans or somewhere in the Northwest (Seattle, Portland) my next stop in the US. Boston, Washington DC and San Francisco are also fun. There are a lot more interesting cities here than Detroit.

  10. Scottland is one of the places I really want to visit one day.
New York is one of my favorite places in the world. But after 11+ years here, I'm done with this cold winters. I wish I could move to New Orleans - I haven't been there yet, but so many friends went there (one moved there after several visits!) and the photos are so lovely + all the fascinating culture, history and pleasant weather. I plan to go there this Summer. (fingers crossed).

  23. I'm originally from Ramsgate :)) I miss the sea.. but only a little bit. I much prefer life in a city. Although Kent is beautiful in the summer, it gets boring in the winter and there isn't that much to do there.. life is quite slow. How do you find life now you have moved from Thanet to Peterborough? :))

If you enjoy walking, San Francisco is great! Especially down around the pier. And Alcatraz! When I was there I ate at one of the best Asian restaurants I've ever been to as well.

  27. I moved to Peterborough via London so it's been a while since I've lived in Thanet, I love going back to visit & I like how for e.g. Margate old town is changing and Whitstable has so much cool stuff going on, but yeah I agree there's not much to do, especially for an artist. I worked behind the bar at The Royal for a spell! x
