The “Be Independent” Creative Business Guide

To run alongside the How I Quit My Day Job Series, I'm writing a "Be Independent Creative Business Guide" for anyone wishing to turn their creative skills into a business. Every other month I will be sharing information on how to start, launch, and grow an independent start-up. A main focus post will be posted on Mondays with related content featured throughout the week.

I think I bit off a bit more than I could chew with running a business, blogging every day, and writing a book. I'm still working on it, I haven't forgotten and it's still going to happen. Since I have been sharing a lot of the content that would have featured in the book anyway, I've decided to combine "Just Start" and the "Be Independent Guide." I just need to find a bit of time to wrap it up properly.

I want to create something that is useful and relevant to anyone considering starting a creative business. If there are any specific questions you would like to see answered in this series - leave a comment, write an email, or tweet me about it.

I'd like advice on how to generate 'likes' into sales. I get lots of compliments and likes on all my items but not many generate into actual sales. It's very likely a sign of creating a bad product but any advice on this would be useful.

    Thanks!

  2. This sounds like a great idea, Sophie. I'm really excited to see the content coming up. For me, I'd just like to see as many insights as possible from all the processes of starting and running a business. I'm in the early idea stages of my own business and the issue I'm struggling with most at the moment is knowing where to start!

I will pre-order if I have to! I'm so looking forward to reading your book. My issue is keeping track of the boring aspect of running a small business - the book keeping. I should probably take a course on it. Curious to know how you manage. I feel overwhelmed with the growing stack of receipts.

  15. I'm definitely going to cover the entire "setting up" process, hopefully from a few new perspectives too. I think there is a lot of corporate business advice out there and a lot of wishy-washy handmade "hobby shop" advice too, I want to bridge the gap :))

  16. Good suggestions - this is something I will definitely write about.

  17. I'm SOO excited for this too...my new year's resolution is to finally start up my ETSY!!! I've been doing research for yearsss and am having "paralysis by analysis" hahaha ahh. I'll be checking in frequently for these posts. I'd like to hear about just getting started. Like what is the moment where you're like "wow, I can actually start a business with this" and what to do from there (make a BUNCH of products, list them all at once and then alert social media? or making a few products, post them to social media to see the kind of reaction...then list them??) Maybe even a post about "mistakes to avoid" from other sellers that have learned from their mistakes. That'll help me a ton!!! <333 Thank you!!!!!

  18. These are AWESOME suggestions - thank you for your input. I will definitely be covering "how to turn your hobby into a business" but the questions you raise are super important and the "mistakes to avoid" is such a great suggestion. I hope I can help and please, let me know if there is anything else you want me to cover
