I have visited a lot of natural history museums and this - the American Museum of Natural History - is possibly the best. Full of the most amazing dioramas dating back to the 1920s; incredible attention has been paid to the backgrounds with skilled taxidermy framed by heavy wood and metal plaques, I was in total awe. I have to admit, the American Museum of Natural History was one of the main reasons I wanted to visit New York and it totally didn't disappoint.
All of these photos are really striking and interesting to look at. Their is something so unsettling about taxidermy to me, it really does take me a moment to realise they're not alive.

I've lost track of how many times I visited the Swedish Museum of Natural History as a child. I absolutely loved it. But the American one looks about ten times more amazing. Definitely another reason to go to New York!

ReplyDeleteIn my 3 times visiting, I now hate to admit to going just once, fairly briefly... Though if you ask me about baked goods shops / bridges... I'm your girl!! ;-) glad it lived up to your expectations xx
ReplyDeletei loved the natural history museum! although i have to say my favourite part of the whole place is the planetarium and the rose centre for earth and space. it was a great balance between general knowledge and actually being really informative and i went to a couple of presentations in the planetarium while i was in NY and i swear if i lived there i would go to every one!

ReplyDeleteMy favourite day in new york EVER was spending an entire morning/better part of an afternoon here, then topping it off with a frozen custard from the Shake Shack :)
ReplyDeleteIt's so amazing, right? I fell in love with this museum before I even visited it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Carla
ReplyDeleteThe planetarium was O K. I didn't think it was as amazing as I expected it to be.. but I'm a sucker for dead animals so that was my absolute favourite part of the museum ;))
ReplyDeleteHaha, oh but it's so worth a visit!
ReplyDeleteThank you
ReplyDeleteI kind of understand, I mean, I LOVE taxidermy but I know of a few people who are repulsed by it.
ReplyDeleteIt was every bit as magical as I expected it to be.
ReplyDeleteThank you - I hope you get to visit sometime.
ReplyDeleteI hope you manage to visit NYC and the American History Museum -it's amazing!

ReplyDeleteThe Helsinki Natural History Museum is AMAZING but this NYC one tops them all - so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThese taxidermy animals were perfect, such great examples. They really did look like live animals.
ReplyDeleteTHESE. PHOTOS. ARE. STUNNING. Holy shit. Unreal! I've been to NYC so many times but I've never visited the Museum of Natural History. I think I'm gonna have to go now ... x
ReplyDeleteWow! I had no idea that taxidermy could look this amazing, at first I thought these were an artists rendering or a photorealistic painting before I read your post. I had no idea this was even a place and I now I think I'll go visit.
ReplyDeleteAmazing snaps!

This is my favorite museum! Went to a lot growing up, and also spent a few years volunteering/interning there. It was cool to feel like I was a part of it!
