Do Something Small
If you’re not up to dealing with the big tasks, do something small; strike those two minute tasks off your to-do list and get something done today. Clear your schedule by doing the smaller, less time consuming tasks, which will save you time during the rest of the week.
Do Some Thinking
Maybe the problem isn’t you but your routine; think about your most productive hours and how you can use them to your advantage. If you’re forcing yourself to get up early when really you’re better working late at night, switch your routine around and make it work for you.
Do Some Planning
We’re often unproductive because we don't know what we're supposed to be doing. Sit down with your planner and work out how you can cover lost ground. Organise your work schedule to plan out the next few days; if you know exactly what you’re supposed to be doing and when, you’ll avoid any more unproductive moments.
Do Not Worry About It
We all have unproductive days occasionally and if it’s not a habit, don’t sweat it - strike the day off and forget about it. Come back to your work tomorrow with refreshed enthusiasm; once in a while we just need a bit of time to slack off and that’s OK.
Great post, Sophie. I think we can all out so much pressure on ourselves in trying to make sure every day is as productive as possible. But those unproductive days are just part of life. These are great tips :)

Love these short, to the point posts - It really pairs things down to the basics and makes tackling problems like unproductive days manageable and understandable. Agree with all the points here. Esp. the last one - sometimes we just need unproductive days to avoid burn outs and sometimes it's the mind's way of telling us we need a bit of a break.

I do start getting worried and anxious if I spend a day withoutdoing anything productive. It is especially hard if you are working for yourself. Because then every moment can be a moment for work. I guess it is the downfall of being your own boss. But I do agree that planning is very helpful. Once you divide everything into small pieces, everything is easier to get through.

Starting from something small helps me to move to bigger stuff. I would love to be productive everyday at the same high level but it is just not possible.

Ughh! I had the most unproductive day yesterday where I literally sat on my phone for 4 hours. I think I have a problem. Today I should probably follow some of these tips and get on track...

ReplyDeleteSometimes we have unproductive days, dwelling on them just makes it worse.
ReplyDeleteThank you
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, I totally agree. I've learned not to dwell on unproductive days and just remember I can fix it later.
ReplyDeleteI do the same; I wasted an entire day chasing new suppliers and even though I was really doing work, I felt like it was unproductive because at the end I only had a couple of new suppliers..
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading - I'm glad it helped.
ReplyDeleteThanks

ReplyDeleteAwesome - so glad it was helpful.
ReplyDeleteI definitely find planning helps and I am least productive when I haven't written a clear task list for the day.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely - I think, when we have an unproductive day, it's usually because either we haven't prepared properly and given ourselves a clear set of tasks to achieve, or we simply need to chill out and take a break.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely - I know I do. It's important to know that it's OK to have an "off day" where we're not as productive as other days. We can't always maintain super productivity!
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely advice, I really like the thinking idea about ways to improve your routine www.jessmcguireblogs.blogspot.co.uk
