Black Hole by Charles Burns
year: 1995 | pages: 368 | rating: 4/5
A sexually transmitted mutant disease has started to infect suburban teenagers in the mid-1970s. The disease manifests itself through deformities ranging from the obvious and grotesque to the subtle and concealable. Either way, once you've got it there is no cure. Black Hole doesn't deal with fighting against a mutant plague but depicts the alienation felt by high schoolers that descends into despair. The artwork is amazing and adds an awesome sense of atmostphere to the story telling.
Probably Nothing by Matilda Tristram
year: 2014 | pages: 96 | rating: 3/5
Matilda Tristram was 17 weeks pregnant when she found out she had bowel cancer. Probably Nothing explores the feelings and fears of dealing with a life-threatening illness. This graphic novel will put all your petty worries into perspective and shows you should cherish life.

The Small Hand by Susan Hill
year: 2010 | pages: 167 | rating: 3/5
Adam Snow discovers an old derelict house when he takes a wrong turn, after exploring inside he feels an ominous presence and the sensation of a small hand holding his own. The presence follows him from there on out and leads Adam to discovers something dark lurking in his family's history. Not as spooky as I was hoping for but an enjoyable and quick read regardless.
Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill
year: 2014 | pages: 182 | rating: 5/5
Dept. of Speculation is a beautifully written book about love and longing; it's about speculating and ruminating; it's about falling in and out of love. It's heartbreakingly sad but in a warm, familiar way. There are few characters and no names, which makes everything seem more personal in a strange sort of way. Dept. of Speculation is one of those books that is tough to describe but you'll tell everyone you meet to read it.
Wow this list is great, I'll have to check these books out. The plots are really unique to me so thanks for sharing this list!
ReplyDeleteLiterally all of these books are now on my must read!

Dear Sophie, my first comment - thank you very much for this lovely space of yours! You're actually the one who inspired me to read again after 7 years of not reading ever since I graduated high school. I just love the photos you take of books and liked the idea of enjoying a cup of tea and a good book. Slowly, I started reading more and more and now I'm reading 2 - 4 books a month! It's such a good habit to have and I love seeing my bookshelf build up. One of the first books I read recommended by you is The Secret History by Donna Tartt... So good! I like that we have similar tastes and therefore know that I can trust your recommendations. I'm sooo excited to read Dept. of Speculation after reading your review and am going to order a copy now. Sending you lots of good wishes and gratitude, and look forward to the next book post! x

Probably bothing sounds very very interesting. I mean it sounds like an interesting story, but I'm more intrigued by the fact that it's a graphic novel.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't so into the drawings but the story was really "good."

ReplyDeleteAwesome :))
ReplyDeleteFor once I had an awesome couple of weeks of reading!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sophie! I remember reading that you're not into Haruki Murakami's books. Correct me if I'm wrong - I tried to do a google search of your blog + Murakami and can't see to find any related posts. If you're open to it, I would like to hear what you think about the Wind Up Bird Chronicles. I feel like it might be something you'd like! Ps, I remember your glowing review for House of Leaves, but I chickened out after the first few pages lol, it was too scary for me!!
ReplyDeleteI have read Norwegian Wood.. and I really hated it. I have never disliked a book so much, I don't think. BUT, saying that, I'm not someone to write off an author based on one book so I'm definitely going to read more and I think Wind Up Bird Chronicles might be next.
ReplyDeleteYes, House of Leaves TERRIFIED me - I felt like I was going insane - so I totally don't blame you for giving up after a few pages ;))
I'm so excited to know you're going to give it a go! Wind Up Bird Chronicles is my favourite book of all time and in my opinion, Murakami's best - an equal mix of romance, fantasy, mystery, horror, thriller! I can't wait to read what you think about it! :)
