A Decluttering Checklist

The Ultimate Decluttering Checklist For Organising Your Home

The 1st of March marks the first day of spring in the UK and provides an excellent chance to spring clean your home. I’ve created the ultimate decluttering checklist you can use to carry out a thorough downsizing of your entire home, room by room.

My advice for decluttering your home is to devote as many hours as it takes to tackle each room (or section) until it’s completed before moving onto the next. You can do it in whichever order works before for you; my preference is to start with the bedroom then the bathroom, kitchen, living room, office, and finally decor and special occasion items. I like to collect all the of the same type together - beauty products or clothing, for instance - and work through that section before attempting to declutter anything else. Experiment with decluttering methods to find one that suits you. Work methodically; tackle each area piece by piece before moving on to the next. Don’t try to do too much all at once.

The main question to bear in mind when deciding what to keep is: Does this serve a purpose? If something adds value to your life - whether it “sparks joy” or has a job in the home - keep it. If you’re struggling to make decisions, box up the items you’re undecided about and store them (out of sight) for 3-6 months. If you need them during this time, keep them. It’s more likely you’ll forget what is even in that box and you’ll feel free to get rid of the entire lot. Try to find a home elsewhere for things you do not want to keep, try eBay, Depop, or Freecycle.
