Testing Basics With Organic Basics

Lingerie is such a personal yet integral part of every outfit that finding the perfect fit is so important not only to style but comfort. Well-fitting undergarments are the often unspoken secret to a making an outfit look great and yet finding the right ones often proves tricky. I’ve always found lingerie to be one of the hardest things to get right when it comes to building a minimalist or capsule wardrobe; I’m slowly discovering brands whose products I love and whose ethics I trust.

I’ve been testing out Organic Basics and I wanted to share with you my thoughts on the quality, fit, and style of their wardrobe basics. I ordered the Triangle Bra* and Woman’s Tee* from the organic cotton range, and a set of Cheeky Briefs and Tank Top* from the new invisible range.

Quality

Underthings need to be soft, comfortable, and gentle against the skin, with no itchy seams or sharp underwires. These Organic Basics pieces are so well made you don’t even feel as though you’re wearing them. The invisible range is made using recycled nylon and is designed in a way that the seams don’t show and the fabric doesn’t roll or ride-up so your underwear stays in place. The organic cotton range uses GOTS certified organic cotton to make the Triangle Bra and Woman’s Tee, and the invisible range is made using recycled nylon. All of the pieces I’ve been testing are incredibly soft to the touch and kind on the skin. The cotton has a lovely weighty feel that’s sturdy and supportive while the recycled nylon feels slinky, helping you to achieve a smooth silhouette.

Style & Fit

The sizing guide and product information on the Organic Basics website proved robust enough to accurately predict what size items to pick and I’m happy the sizes I chose were the best for me.

The Organic Basics Woman’s Tee is a classic t-shirt and a basic for any minimalist capsule wardrobe. Made using GOTS certified mid-weight organic cotton and designed with a long form clean cut and crewneck, it’s the ideal tee for everyday wear. The elastane gives the tee a slim and fitted style making this a great piece for my activewear capsule. While the sleeves are short, they’re a little longer than most tees providing a much more flattering cut. I love the weighty feel of the fabric and how it feels against the skin; I’ve worn it for yoga and it’s shown itself to be both comfortable and durable.

It’s tough to find a triangle bra that provides adequate support without an annoying underwire but Organic Basics has managed it. Made from double lined, soft yet sturdy organic cotton with a touch of elastane to give it a slight bit of stretch; the design is a traditional triangle bra cut with darted cups and a thick band allowing the bra to shape itself to your natural contours, achieving a comfortable and supportive fit. You can adjust the bra to personalise the fit using the adjustable straps and closure - features other triangle bras tend not to have. It gives your silhouette the illusion of a standard bra without any of the fussy underwire or padded cups. I’ll definitely be ordering this in black when the website has been restocked!

The Invisible Tank Top is a useful piece for wearing underneath sheer blouses, layering for extra warmth, or wearing as activewear. The recycled nylon fabric used to create the top gives it a silky feeling that glides over the skin and hugs the contours of your body. Despite being figure-hugging, it’s super comfortable to wear and creates a clean silhouette that gives your outfit a sharp appearance. The Tank Top has quite a long fit, which makes it work almost like body shaping underwear to smooth out your silhouette except without the awful constriction of tight fitting spandex. I’ve worn this during yoga and because it’s so lightweight and breathable, you can move about in it effortless without worrying about the fabric bunching or rolling up.

The knickers, they’re not for me. Made from the same recycled nylon as the Tank Top with a seamless design there’s plenty of stretch in these making them comfortable and not constrictive. It’s simply that the cut of the Cheeky Briefs doesn’t suit my body shape (small waist, big hips). If these were available in a high-leg style I’d definitely be ordering more, fingers crossed Organic Basics make some in this style.

Ethics

Organic Basics make their range using 80% less water and 90% fewer emissions. They’re committed to using quality fabrics and better factories to make their products by shunning the unsustainable methods of the current fashion industry that are bad for the environment and for us. Organic Basics understands that ‘better made’ means investing in quality that lasts. They focus on the entire supply chain from materials to packaging, keeping an eye n water waste, transportation, and manufacturing. The sustainable fabrics, ethical factories, and long lasting designs means Organic Basics can produce clothing you can be proud of wearing, and I’m proud to share.

Final Thoughts

I can breathe a sign of relief when I reach into my lingerie drawer and pull out basics I love wearing. Discovering pretty underthings that feel as good as they look has been a real struggle so I’m happy I’ve found a brand that delivers not only on comfort and style but ethics and sustainability too. I now have a well stocked selection of basics for my activewear capsule and lingerie that enables my outfits to look their best. Organic Basics would be the first place I recommend to anyone looking to build a minimal wardrobe from the foundations up; there’s everything you need to help you get started, or refresh your existing capsule.
